Caitlyn Ma

While originally a Newbolt candiate, Caitlyn was moved into Hannay at the beginning of the year due to removal of unsuitable candidates. Born in China, she lived there for ten years with her Chinese father and her Scottish mother. However after the murder of her father, Caitlyn and her mother fled from China and returned to Scotland. The time between her father's death and attending Deveraux were one of the most unstable times of her life. She sought control over whatever she could, her food intake. On admittance to Deveraux it was noted that she was borderline anorexic and would have to be monitored closely. Her recovery was in part due to her former boyfriend Leon Thomas and the confidence that he gave her. They grew apart and are now just friends.

Caitlyn has black, slightly curly, mid-length hair which is always gathered in a loose pony-tail at the base of her neck. She is half Chinese, which explains most of her features, but her mother is Scottish, so her features aren't that pronounced. She is of medium height, about 5'6'', but is too thin for her height. She is being kept an eye on by the medical staff at Deveraux about her weight as it is thought that she may be a borderline anorexic.

She is very defensive of herself, and likes to be in control of what is going on in her life, including how she looks. She doesn't have a good self-image and never thinks she is attractive to the opposite sex. She tries to cover up most of her body due to these insecurities, mainly in trousers and long sleeve tops.

She has a very logical mind and always thinks things through even if it takes longer to come to a decision. This aspect of her personality means that her favourite subject is Maths but she is also above average at Physics and Chemistry. Caitlyn isn't very creative with subjects like English, Art, Drama and Music. It frustrates her that she can't express herself properly and this is one of the reasons why she keeps all her feelings bottled up inside. She rarely opens up to people, thinking that her own business is private and other people don't need to know about it.

She tries to bury herself in work so she doesn't get too close to people and so she feels like she is in control of things. She always thinks about what she says before she says it.

Caitlyn was brought up in China as an only child until she was ten. She spoke fluent Chinese during her childhood and only learnt Gaelic from her Scottish mother, as, before meeting her father, her mother lived in a community where they spoke Gaelic as their first language. Her mother, Máiri, never expected that Caitlyn would have to speak English. Her parents met when Máiri was taking a year out to go travelling around the world, visited China and fell in love with her father, Ma Xiantu.

Caitlyn moved when her father was murdered, which affected her life greatly as would be expected. The murderer was never caught and her mother kept the reason why her father died a secret from her. Almost immediately after the murder, Máiri quickly packed up the house they were staying in and, without telling anybody, moved back to Scotland, where they lived ever since. They couldn't move back to Máiri's home town as Máiri had been disgraced due to her marrying Caitlyn's father.

To Caitlyn, it felt like her life was spinning out of control; she had just moved to a country where she could barely speak the language and found it hard to express herself, only being able to do it in Chinese and Gaelic, which only her mother understood. It has been since then that she has been trying to control her life. Her mother became ill when she was twelve and Caitlyn ended up being fostered, and then in a Children's Home. It was here that she was noticed by a Selector Agent. It wasn't until there was a fire at the Home that she became a potential student, as she was seen as being too fragile and not in control of herself. It was only when she successfully managed to save a group of children younger than her from the attic by using her resourcefulness that it was decided that this outweighed her being too fragile. The only condition for her admittance into the Deveraux was that she would be closely monitored by both the medical and psychiatric staff. Once she had been released from hospital after suffering smoke inhalation and some burns to her hands, she was asked to attend Deveraux.
