Maxwell Clerk

Having lived in Boston from birth, Max has always had a vested interest in its running and how its citizens are treated. His early experience of watching his father rape his sister has always impacted his decisions in life, especially when he decided to join The Delegates of Themis. Even when given the chance to leave before the gang ended he stayed on because it is what he believed in. He was arrested and is now incarcerated alongside Julian.

Max has very chiselled features with high cheekbones and what some people might describe as pouty lips. Standing at 5'10", Max is of normal height, weight and build. His stern chocolate-brown eyes are normally hidden behind tortoiseshell glasses. Whilst he needs them to see long distances, they're much more of a fashion statement than anything; he could easily have paid for corrective surgery, but he sees them as part of himself after so long wearing them. Max's features are complimented by his brown, normally uncombed hair (with slight blond highlights), goatee beard and moustache.

Max's fashion sense is very smart with a suit and hat, but he refuses wears a tie, preferring to go open neck for comfort.

How he was raised has tailored Max's personality - he regretted not doing more when he was younger and has always felt that he should make up for it in some way by not having the same happen to other people. He is a very private person and does not go around telling everyone his life secrets. For all his work he doesn't want any praise; just the fact that he is helping is all that matters for him.

Max tries to do what is best for the majority, even if a minority of people get hurt along the way - as long as more people have their lives improved then he believes it is the right course of action. This is one of the reasons he agrees with The Delegates' ideals.

Max has a very caring side which he showed when he worked as a low-paid counsellor for a Victim Support Centre. His parents would have thought he'd wasted all the money they spent to make sure he got into Harvard to make him exactly like his father, but Max was glad that he had made what he thought to be a lucky escape. He does also have a violent side towards anyone who causes other people pain for their own pleasure. This may seem to be contradicting but if violence can solve the problems of the world and make the unfair world fair once more, then Max would do anything.

Max was born in the Back Bay area of Boston, as the youngest child of his banker father and his socialite mother. He had an older sister by two years called Gabrielle. He was raised with all the connections he would need to take over from his father when he was old enough, but that was not the path that Max wanted to follow. He hated his father after, at the age of seven, witnessing him rape his own nine-year-old daughter, Gabrielle. After trying in vain to stop him, his father had pushed him away and in the process broke his arm. His father threatened him to not to tell a soul what he had done or he would be next. He tried to tell his mother but she would not listen to him, not wanting to ruin the reputation she had work so hard to create for the Clerk family. She knew full well what her husband was doing but took no action. This had a profound impact on Max's home life, leading to him not wanting to trust anyone apart from Gabrielle, and also on his future career. He had seen the failings of society right in front of him where his father was allowed to get away with sexually abusing his own daughter.

He graduated from Harvard with a degree in Political Economy and Government and was offered a job where his father worked. He turned this down, cutting himself off from all his family apart from his sister. He got a job manning phones at the local Victim Support Centre and offering a counselling service at the local refuge. He tried to do his best for all the people who were suffering the same way that his sister did. His views about the state of the Justice system were well-known and through this he heard rumours of a new organisation that wanted to make that change he had been waiting so long for.
