Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Tyler Russell graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a major in Archaeology and since then has frequently found himself working abroad, often for months at a time. Currently, he works for Alexandria University in Egypt, and first met Brooke Dawson when she took her English students on a trip to the campus. The two have been dating for almost six months, although Tyler was initially hesitant about the fifteen-year age-gap between them and still laughs whenever Brooke refers to him as her boyfriend. Gifted with a good sense of humour, Tyler is generally very easy-going and always has plenty of stories to tell about the different places he's visited.

Vivian married her high school sweetheart, she was a cheerleader and he was a footballer. He graduated the year before she did and once she did the same she moved to Philadelphia, however she didn't attend the college. She found a full time job waitressing while Tyler was busy with his studies. They married when he graduated but they have sporadically lived together due to the nature of Tyler's career. Once Kirsten was born, her loneliness decreased. She made the decision after Tyler had been in Alexandria for over six months that maybe it was time the family to be together full time.
Kirsten is used to just living with her mother even though her parents are still together. She goes through periods of seeing her Dad and then him going away to work. While she would be leaving her friends behind, she was excited about going to live in Egypt as it meant her family could be together.
